| Tamworth..........................
A little Village, Located about 3 hours east of
Toronto, and about 40 km North of Kingston, Ontario(45 minutes)
The first Settlers that found Sheffield (Tamworth) was the Wheelers and I do believe the Huffmans, The settlement of the Village began in 1826, when James Huffman bought 400 acres for about a $1 and Acre Calvin Wheeler, a Vermont Millright, established
the first Saw Mill in 1830. It made square timbers and Staves for barrows.
Ninety percent of the early settlers were Irish
immigrants looking for vaccant and affordable farm land. By 1857,
Instead of taking a day or so walking or driving a heard of cattle to Kingston, once the railway was build it took them 4 hours for a round trip there and back! - Local industries suffered because of the new access to a flood of finished goods from Industrial centers. In the year 1894, Fire destroyed much of the down town area of Tamworth. Hotel owner Samson Shields made the best of the situation by starting a brickyard. Most of the buildings were replaced with his bricks over the next 5 years. We now have(1999) a population of about 600 people that live in the village and about 1400 people in all, including the Outskirts!, We have plenty of other small Towns and Villages that surround us also - some that are smaller and some are larger than Tamworth! It's Such a small town, that every one knows just about everyone around here! We have several Business here to account for - Bank, Post Office, Liquor Store, Hotel, 2 Auto Repair Garages, Carpenters, Plumbers, Electricians, 2 Gas Stations, Barber Shop,Video Store,Corner Store,Lumber Yard, Pizza place and soon to be Grocery store for every one to come out and support! |
