What we Believe

St. Mark's is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, a fellowship of 650 congregations extending from Nova Scotia to British Columbia. The origins of the Lutheran Church go back to the Reformation in the 16th century, and the theological insights of Martin Luther:

  1. Faith alone as the access to God.
  2. Grace alone as the description of God's dealings with humanity.
  3. Scripture alone as the basis of Christian teaching.

This congregation confesses the Triune God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - as the one true God. We acknowledge that the gospel is the revelation of God's saving will and grace in Jesus Christ, which He imparts through word and sacrament. Through these means of grace the Holy Spirit creates believers and unites them with their Lord and with one another in the fellowship of the Christian Church.

This congregation accepts the Holy Scriptures (the old and new testaments) as the inspired Word of God, and subscribes to the founding documents of the Lutheran Church, the Book of Concord of 1580, as the way in which the Scriptures have been correctly understood.

We are dedicated to continue the mission of Christ on earth; to be continuously renewed by celebrating the life of Christ through worship, witness and example; to grow in faith through preaching, teaching, administration of the sacraments and fellowship; and to share our time, talents, and possessions to serve others. We do all these things out of love for Jesus, who said, "This I command you, to love one another."
