For
many people there is a significant event which alters the course
of their lives. Mine took place during my third year of chemistry
at university when I was exposed to the explosion of international
art at Expo ’67 in Montreal. I was awestruck, excited and
inspired by the quantity and scope of the painting and sculpture
I saw all that summer. I knew then that ‘art’ was where
I wanted to focus my energy.
After
studies at the (then) Montreal Museum of Fine Arts School and after
completing my B.F.A. at Concordia University, my ‘career’
has led me through a wide range of pursuits from painting and printmaking
to special effects for film and television.
In
the early 80’s I worked a stint at the Harbourfront jewelry
studio and 2 years at Letke Design, a Toronto firm creating custom
and production jewelry in sterling and gold. I then engaged in creating
props and set pieces at both the Stratford and Shaw Theatre Festivals.
By the mid to late 80’s I had designed and built theatre sets
and props for various theatre companies in Toronto and was also
Art Director for many music videos for Champagne Productions. It
was the positive response to my concrete, stainless and glass furniture
in the first VIRTU design show in Toronto that led me to producing
commissioned ‘Art Furniture’.
In
1990 I moved to Westport and established a studio to continue this
work. I set up a forge and began exploring hand forged iron and
steel that I used to create sculpture and commissioned railings.
Currently
my creativity is calling me back to my jeweler’s bench where
I am once again applying my 3D art / design skills to jewelry –
earrings, brooches, pendants and bracelets. However, I still also
create sculpture in many media, on-going and on commission.
