Eight new galleries at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre

Hello !

The eight new galleries at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre on Queen's University Campus are open and ready to receive classes of eager young art students... of ALL ages! The renovated and expanded facility offers a range of exhibitions from European historical art to the most cutting edge contemporary Canadian works. The rich permanent collection includes African sculpture, Inuit Art, Canadian paintings and decorative arts. And, the new s studio named after the Centre's first Director, Andre Bieler, is a pleasant light-filled space where elementary and secondary students enjoy hands-on activities related to their gallery tours and instruction.
For high school students, the First Nations artist, Robert Houle's multi-media installation called, "Zero Hour", makes use of oil paintings, laser beams, text and sand paintings that raise provocative questions about politics, technology and our values. Students explore the nature of contemporary art as well as current issues in their own lives. History students find this adventure as relevant as do students of art.
The Agnes has something for teachers too.... from informal workshops they are ready to introduce these programs to their classes with an advance understanding of each exhibition.
But, you don't have to be either one of these to enjoy an hour or two at this amazing place....it's open to everyone!
The Centre's Founder, Agnes Etherington, who upon her death donated the family home as part of the formation of the Gallery, would no doubt be pleased and proud of the fine learning opportunities her original idea created...... The New Agnes Etherington Art Gallery on Queen's Campus..... more of the good news in education!
