Telephone Pioneers of America - Partners in Education
"It's difficult to imagine how big this country really is when you are a young student looking at a map of Canada in an atlas. But, when you can check out the size of the map painted on the school yard pavement, stand your whole class in the province of Ontario and have room left over, you get the picture. The telephone Pioneers of America, Kingston Chapter #55 have a plan to paint a map of Canada in many school play areas for that very reason. Students have a blast discovering where the Northwest Territories are and how far it is form Kingston to Thunder Bay when they can do it on a learning tool like this. Large Canada maps are painted on cement by members of the local Nortel Pioneers as just one volunteer project involving education. SMART BEARS, small colourful stuffed bears, each wearing a backpack with a book inside, are distributed to Junior Kindergarten children in 32 local schools each fall. It encourages youngsters to learn to love reading at an early age and parents to see the value of reading to their children every day. Maureen Sauve is a volunteer with Chapter #55. She says they just can't keep up with the demand for maps and Smart Bears, but they believe so strongly in these projects that they are working overtime this season. Telephone Pioneers of America - community partners, and more of the "good news" in education! "AN EDUCATED MINUTE IS BROUGHT TO YOU TODAY BY MILL AND ROSS ARCHITECTS OF KINGSTON...
