BENEFITS TO PARTNERS
- Elementary and Secondary Students - benefit from an Integrated Curriculum enrichment with "hands-on" opportunities to experience the real world of work and an introduction to potential careers.
- Business Partners - Tag endings with individualized slogans demonstrating their commitment to education without mentioning a product ("AN EDUCATED MINUTE" is brought to you today by the Leasing Centre of Kingston, believing in a "GOOD" public education.!)
- The Teachers - benefit from Curriculum enrichment activities, with individual student support from professional mentors and the promotion of successful student ventures.
- The Parents - benefit from daily opportunities to hear what's happening in classrooms ensuring that Public Education Works! ("Hello! I'm Lauren, and I'm from Perth Road Public School...we're working on Geometric Relationships this week...YIKES!!! I can't wait for Chess Club to begin again this year...our student teachers are great. They really "get down" with us and I can learn better that way.")
- The Educational Institutions - benefit from regular connection with the public through radio - promotion of achievements, student successes, curriculum up-dates, volunteer appreciation through profiles, bus safety, media releases etc., promotion of partnerships with radio stations, businesses and local organizations as well as education support staff ("working together for the education of your children")
- Other Stakeholders and the Public - Learning is a life-long affair, so all listeners have an interest at one time or another. Audiences hear what's happening, recognize names and program opportunities ("If you are interested in going back to school, here's a message for you!") When there are changes in education direction, knowing the facts allow the public to make informed decisions and opinions.
STARTING YOUR OWN "AN EDUCATED MINUTE"
Ability to be Used as a Model
To date, two variations modeled on "AN EDUCATED MINUTE" radio program have been established by other Boards of Education in Ontario; neither are daily, nor are their partnerships as extensive. Interest has been expressed by The Calgary Teachers' Association, Yellowknife Board of Education and the Prince Edward Island Department of Education.
Establishing "AN EDUCATED MINUTE" Partnership in other communities is not a complicated venture. Every partner benefits and the cost is minimal. Boards of Education are searching for effective communication tools. Schools, programs, newsletters and Communications departments provide topics. Students contribute their writing skills, while teachers provide curriculum guidelines. Radio Stations require local content and sixty - ninety seconds isn't a lot of time to donate as public service. More and more, corporate businesses are recognizing their role in supporting education and they benefit from their association through apprenticeship programs and as future employers.
An important contributing factor is that the on-air voice is one of known integrity, has a strong connection to education and is not a regular radio announcer as in advertising. The writing calls for creative scripts, humour and factual material. The on-air time should be prime drive-home or early morning breakfast time when the largest audience is listening. A single co-ordinator can organize and develop the project through an educational institution. Katherine Leverette is happy to assist any organization with an interest. With clear objectives and close attention paid to the needs of all partners, "AN EDUCATED MINUTE" works!
