Back to The McNairns of New Brunswick.
Sometime before 1860, James and William McNAIRN and their brother-in-law Thomas JOHNSON moved from Galloway near Rexton south to Mill Creek between Bouctouche and Ste-Marie-de-Kent.1 All three had large families. They farmed there, and also operated by times a grist mill, a saw mill, and a shipbuilding business, and with the opening of a post office in 1892 the area became officially known as McNairn.
This was a beautiful wooded area with rolling hills, and a rushing stream running through. On one high bank was the home of William McNairn, a fine, large, white building. On the opposite bank was the home of James Johnson, a cosy, rambling home with several farm buildings -- including a smithy, an ice house, barns, granaries, etc. On the stream and near each other were a lumber mill (run by William McNairn) and a grist mill (run by James Johnson). A large wooden water wheel supplied the power. When the writer last saw the above in 1921 there was very little left than the beautiful old water wheel encased in moss. The mill stream had dwindled, due to the loss of trees. At the time of writing, in 1975 the whole area of Mill Creek has been made into a government controlled grazing area...2
James McNAIRN, third child and eldest son of Anthony McNAIRN Sr., was born 28 February 1825. James married three times:3-8
The Johnsons have it from McNairn family tradition that Ann was the daughter of Donald McBEATH of Mill Creek and Euphemia McINTOSH, that Margaret was Ann's sister, and that Christina was their cousin.
There is, however, a problem with this. According to a recent transcription of the Presbyterian cemetery stones in Buctouche,14 Margaret McBeath daughter of Donald and Euphemia died in 1858 at age 16! I have not yet visited the stone myself to confirm this, but if it is correct it clearly contradicts the Johnsons' account. Are the public records any help? There is only one Margaret McBeath in Kent County in the 1861 Census: A 20-year-old servant in the household of L.P.W. DesBrisay of Richibucto. Since she's not in her father's household we get nothing from this except the vague indication of geography, which is exactly as much as we get from her marriage announcement in 1871: "Miss Margaret McBeath of Richibucto."
Since the reliability of the Johnsons' history is now thrown into doubt we should also ask, how do we know that Ann was Donald McBeath's daughter? The only hint we have independent of the McNairn family tradition is in her marriage announcement: "m. At residence of John KESWICK, Buctouche (Kent Co.) 22nd ult. [August 1853], by Rev. James Law, James McNARIN / Miss Ann McBEATH both of Wellington parish." The only McBeaths we know of in Wellington Parish at the time were Donald's family, so the obvious conclusion supports the tradition.
James and Ann had the following children.3,4
Ann died 9 May 1870 at age 34 and was buried in Buctouche.10,14
James married Margaret McBEATH on 7 January 187111. Margaret was born about 1840. Since she is associated with Richibucto both by the 1861 census and by her marriage announcement, I now believe she was the daughter of Alexander McBEATH and Isabella WATHEN of Richibucto Cape.
Whoever she was, Margaret bore James the following children:5-8
Margaret died on 23 August 187712 and was buried in the Buctouche Presbterian cemetery.14
James married Christina McBEATH of Richibucto on 9 July 1879 at Hopewell Corner, Albert County.13 By process of elimination we can be reasonably confident that Christina was (also?) the daughter of Alexander McBEATH of Richibucto Cape. Christina was born 7 September 1849. James and Christina had the following children.6-8
James died 16 June 1914 and was buried in Buctouche.14 Christina moved to Moncton to live with her son Chalmers, and died 8 August 1937.45
The interpretation I put upon the problem of the three wives is this: It may be that the family remembered that James' wives were two sisters and a cousin. Perhaps someone later may have over-interpreted the tradition as, literally, "first two sisters, then their cousin", when the reality actually had the two sisters after their cousin.
1The Mill Creek referred to here is the creek running into the Bouctouche River
about five miles above Bouctouche. The area is variously known as McNairn,
Ste-Marie-de-Kent, or St Mary's.
Be careful to avoid confusion with the Mill Creek which runs into the Richibucto River
a similar distance above Rexton, an area also known as Upper Rexton.

William McNAIRN, sixth child of Anthony Sr. of Galloway, was born 28 March 1829. On 10 December 1857 he married Isabella Matilda Wathen McBEATH.46 Matilda, born 22 December 1839, we believe to be the daughter of Donald McBEATH and Euphemia McINTOSH.47 William and Matilda had the following children:48-54
Matilda passed away 11 May 1890 and was buried in Buctouche.7 On 2 April 1891 William married Mary Agnes GIFFORD60 (b. 23 April 1827) at St. John's Presbyterian Church in Moncton. William died in 1916, Mary died 2 September 1918.
Anthony, the eldest son of William McNAIRN and Isabella McBEATH, was born on 6 February 1860. On 24 December 1890 he married Katie S. MacLEAN.61,62 Anthony was the first postmaster of the McNairn post office in 1892.63
Anthony and Katie had the great ill-fortune to lose four of their six children in infancy:14,64-66
Katie died on 8 December 1903 and was buried in Buctouche.
Anthony went on to marry Janet S. COATES on 14 June 1910 and had two children:68,66
Anthony died on 19 December 1930 and Janet passed away in 1946.70,14
James Lee McNAIRN, second son of William and Isabella, married Agnes Jane WARD on 3 September 1890.71 Agnes was born 29 December 1865, the daughter of Thomas WARD and Jane GIRVAN. James and Agnes had the following children:72,73,74
Agnes died in 1943 and James Lee died on 29 December 1947.54
William Wallace, the third son on William McNAIRN and Isabella McBEATH, married Janet Maria TURNBULL on 20 June 1898.54 William was a Presbyterian clergyman and was served pastoral charges in Sheet Harbour, Halifax County, and in Westville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. In October 1917 he volunteered to go overseas as a chaplain with the Canadian Expeditionary Force.67
William and Janet had four children:54,87,88
William died on 26 December 1945.54

On the face of it, Donald McBeath named his daughter after
his sister-in-law, Isabel Matilda Wathen wife of Alexander McBeath. This seems to me such
an odd arrangement that I am tempted to question the assertion (apparently originating in
Ida McNairn's records, inherited from her brother and father) that Wm. McNairn's wife was
Donald's daughter. Might she have been Alexander's instead? We're still missing one child
for Alexander McBeath, according to his obituary, and the name "Isabella" does not appear
elsewhere among his children. Given the problems with Margaret McBeath above I think this
bears serious consideration. On the other hand, her marriage announcement describes her
as "Miss Matilda W. McBeath ... of Wellington Parish": Donald McBeath's family lived in
Wellington; Alexander's lived in Richibucto Parish.
