James McLELLAND was born in Gallowayshire, Scotland, about 1781. He married Margaret DOUGLAS, born about 1791, and they migrated from Gallowayshire to New Brunswick in the spring of 1817 with Samuel GIRVAN and Anthony McNAIRN. The three men petitioned together for land a little south of Kingston (now Rexton) and thereby founded the settlement of Galloway.
James and Margaret had the following children:[1,2]
James died 29 March 1846, and Margaret on 21 April 1856. Both are buried in the Galloway Cemetery, which was established on James McLelland's land. (See the link for the story of why.)
Flora, third child of David & Betsey MacINTOSH, was born 04 June 1822 [3]. She married Robert MacLELLAND, son of James and Margaret, on 15 January 1852 [4]. Robert and Flora made their home near Robert's family in Galloway.
Their children were [1,5,6]:Flora and Robert died mere months apart, she on 04 May 1893 and he on 29 October 1893. Both are buried in the Galloway Cemetery.[2]
Samuel McLelland, son of James McLelland and Margaret Douglas, was born about 1825. He married Sarah McIntosh, daughter of Norman and Flora McIntosh of Glenelg Settlement, born about 1827. Samuel and Sarah's children included:[8,9]
Samuel died 19 June 1895. Sarah died 26 September 1911. Both are bured in the Galloway Cemetery near Rexton.
