Thomas Dickson

Thomas, eldest son and fifth child of John and Jenny DICKSON, was born 29 October 1835 in River Philip township.[1] On 09 Dec 1879 he married Hortense SUTHERLAND, eldest daughter of William SUTHERLAND and Mary Jane CRAWFORD of Westchester. Hortense was born 01 May 1855.

Thomas and Hortense's children were:

• Mary Ethel (1881-1968) emigrated to California, married Clarence MAY and had two daughters, Hortense and Julia.
• Purdy Alan, born 31 July 1882, died 04 November 1883 and is buried in the Hillside Cemetery, Springhill.
• John William Sutherland "Will" (1884-1971) married Nellie CARTER (1890-1944), the daughter of John Havelock CARTER and Minnie DOYLE. Will and Nellie had four children, three of whom are still living.

Hortense died of tuberculosis 15 Dec 1885.

On 27 Jun 1889 Thomas married Sarah A. KENT (b.1854), daughter of Jane and Alexander KENT of Claremont, and sister of Elizabeth Jane, wife of his brother Robert. Thomas and Sarah had no offspring. Thomas passed away 26 Nov 1923, and Sarah followed him in 1941. All three lie in the Hillside Cemetery, Springhill.

[1] Thomas was born in River Philip according to the record of his marriage to Hortense, in Rockley according to the record of his marriage to Sarah. I interpret the first as reference to the district River Philip, rather than the settlement of the same name.
