As we collect resources relating to seniors issues and advocacy
we will add them to this list. The list is primarily links to other
web sites, but may include contact information for agencies which
do not have a presence on the Web. At the time of publication, the
links posted were current. However, things change rapidly on the
Net. If you find a link that doesn't work please contact
us.
In this section we will be building a list of organizations
which have advocacy or political action as their primary mandate.

SCIP Advocacy Links on the
Creative Retirement Manitoba website
In the past the website of the SCIP (Seniors Can Information
Program) had provided a list of sites to visit for advocacy for
seniors and their issues anyplace in Canada. Unfortunately this
website is gone, but a few of the remaining links to advocacy
websites are still being provided at the bottom of the website by

Service Agencies Serving the Townships of North, Central and

In this section we will be building a listing of community
agencies of importance to seniors and those who work with seniors.
Most of these agencies do not have web pages yet. If any agency
which provides services for seniors has a site we haven't listed,
we would be pleased to know, and add it to the list.
Kingston Frontenac Public
Library, Ontario, Canada
As well as administrative information about branches and hours of
operations, this web site offers a list of links organized by subject.
The Ready Reference page locates hundreds of searching resources,
dictionaries, daily news and business guides. More government resources
are located on the Canada page. The Job Guide gathers
employment resources and resume hints. Internet resources for parents,
children, teachers and students are located on the Kids, Teen

Seniors Association
The Seniors Association is the largest seniors' association in the
Kingston area, providing information and support to help seniors
live as independently as possible and to enjoy healthy, social and
recreational activities. They also publish and distribute a monthly
magazine called VISTA. There site lists the ongoing events and services
they provide, as well as bulletins about current events.

This is a good comprehensive presentation of Elderhostel's aims,
programs and activities. It's an easy to use site, and includes
a link to contact them.
St. Lawrence College
This site has good basic information about the various programs
offered by the college.

This site has everything you ever wanted to know about Queen's,
its policies, courses, tuition, physical plant, library holdings,
physical education, etc. Numerous contact links to various parts
of the university. If you can't find it here, Queen's hasn't got

Parliament of Canada
Debates
of the House of Commons of Canada (Hansard)
This site contains verbatim debates in the House, organised by date,
title, key-word, sponsor of bill, etc. for easy finding. It's a
well-organised site with the "real deal" on what's happening in
parliament.
Government
Bills
Summaries as well as verbatim text of each bill before parliament
this year, notations on where each bill is in the parliamentary
process, when each stage was reached, where it stands in the order
paper, etc.
Health
Canada: Aging and Seniors Division
A guide to the services, information and educational materials available
through Health Canada. It has some material on seniors' issues,
lists of publications and well-organised weblinks to libraries and
resources. Topics range from materials on specific diseases, disease
prevention, health promotion, injury prevention to seniors' health
and safety.
Government
Electronic Directory Services
Phone and e-mail directories for all government employees Canadawide.
It is searchable by name, department, position and activity, so
even if you don't know the person's name you can find a contact.

This is the "first contact" page for all of the government's pages.
It contains an overview of Canada, its political life, government
programs and services, federal organisations, millennium plans,
etc.

agreements, and other related materials. The site is a comprehensive
overview, clearly organised.

products, news in the health scene, regulations and policy, and
health factors - this last an extensive list of links to sites related
to any one of a number of identified health factors (smoking, diet,
exercise, obesity, etc.)

This site contains information on the AOHC, including a complete
mailing list of all member health centre, general information on
what a health centre is, determinants of health, health promotion
programs, position papers, newsletters and community health links
(a modest list)
The Care Guide
A guide to the maze of care options for seniors, their families
and their advisors. There is an overview of various care options,
a care provider search tool (a new one is in the works) a group
of "featured providers" with profiles that change periodically,
and a "feature of the week" including photos & detailed description.
Very practical, concrete information, seems a little biased towards
the for-profit sector

(Louisiana State University) This is a very slow-to-load site, because
of its size, but it is loaded with hard data on research into geropsychology
- highly informative if a little technical.

CKWS-TV: Southeastern Ontario's
News Leader
This web site offers daily news, weather and sports updates. The
national content is a subset of the CBC news feed. Local content
is developed by CKWS NEWSwatch, but is a little hard to read in
the current format.
The Independent Voice
This is another way to read this community paper, with information
on where to find it in hard copy. Some parts are a bit hard to read
because of type styles/colours.
The Kingston
Whig-Standard
This is a slow load, because of its size, and the fact that parts
of it come from elsewhere. It is a good way to get your daily dose,
if you're shut in and unable to go out to the corner box. It's well
laid out, but in a slightly different format than the paper. All
headline stories in all areas are there, plus classified and announcement
ads, but editorials, comics and crosswords are missing.
GLOBEnet
This offers an almost complete reading of the Globe and Mail. It
is clearly-organised,an easy-to-cruise site.
Canada NewsWire Ltd.
This site has over 95 thousand news releases from all around the
country, including various levels of government, plus the
opportunity to post your own news releases over the same network.

MEGASOURCES:
Surfing for Information and Journalism Resources
This is one Canadian journalism professor's compilation of every
information resource he could think of, plus a free download of
a zipped copy of his book, "Finding Answers". It's a tremendouly
useful site for information gathering.
AgeLine Database
This database is part of the American Association of Retired
Persons site. AgeLine abstracts the literature of social gerontology
as well as aging-related research from psychology, sociology, social
work, economics, public policy, and the health sciences. It
summarizes journal articles, books and chapters, research reports,
dissertations, gray literature, and educational videos from many
publishers and organizations, including AARP. Links to full text or
ordering options are included wherever possible. The database can be
searched at no cost.
Institute for Life Course and Aging
The former Centre for Studies of Aging at the University of
Toronto has changed its name to Institute for Life Course and Aging. It has information related
to stages of life as a process, research data, seminars, publications,
etc.
Queens
University Library Catalogue (QCAT)
This allows you to search Queen's libraries from the comfort of
home - there are extensive search tips, and all Queen's libraries
are included, medical, sciences, law, etc.
Gerontology
Resources on the World Wide Web
This is a list by the Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program at the
University of Utah, USA, but has a very broad coverage of sites on a
variety of aging issues. Age of Reason
This site has over 5,000 links of interest to those over 50. The
site is somewhat commercial, including a seniors' internet mall,
access to seniors' discounts, etc.

the Kingston area, providing a variety of important services and
recreational opportunities for seniors.
Fifty-Plus.net - Canadian
Association of Retired Persons
This calls itself an online "community" for 50+ people, including
cyberpals, information, research on the most common scams inflicted
on seniors, seniors' online purchasing centre, etc. Some parts are
hard to read because of choices in type style/colour/backgrounds.
Manitoba
Society Of Seniors
The mission of the MSOS is "To represent Manitobans age 50 plus by
promoting their needs and concerns
and by presenting a positive image of older adults in the
community." Of special interest might be the "Advocacy" and
"Helpful Links" pages.
American Association of Retired
Persons (AARP)
This powerful American association's website outlines their lobbying
efforts, political positions, member discounts on a variety of items/services.
Some parts are hard to read because of colours and styles of type.

Disaster
Preparedness for Seniors by Seniors
The Rochester-Monroe County Chapter of the American Red Cross set
up this page in response to Ice Storm ‘98. They have compiled a
good list of concrete suggestions on how to become prepared for
disasters, all of which can be undertaken by seniors and others.
It also contains stories of ice storm survival, how-to information
on making home systems work in crisis, etc.
